|HandsOn Greater DC Cares will continue its proud tradition of honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the role of community service as a valuable instrument for social change. In addition to the annual celebration, it will also recognize the 57th Presidential Inauguration. The two events present a unique opportunity to unite both celebrations into one big weekend of service! |
With the power of HandsOn Greater DC Cares's network of community partners and volunteers, Hands On Greater DC Cares will mobilize more than 5,000 volunteers in service to local communities, schools and nonprofits for the 2013 Inauguration - Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Service.
Hundreds of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds will come together to improve lives and work towards the common goal of improving the local community.
With the help of our sponsors and community volunteers, this year’s MLK Day of Service will have a special focus on engaging youth in service; empowering young people to take their education a step further and become advocates within the democratic process all while making a difference in their community. Youth volunteers will work alongside other community members and will have the opportunity to volunteer at a variety of sites supporting a range of issue areas; encouraging them to identify the social issues that are important to them in order to inspire them to serve.
Project selection will begin in mid December, so expect an email from us around then letting you know it's time to pick your project site. Organized in partnership with the ServeDC, Points of Light, Target, Volunteer FairFax and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement and the 57th Presidential Inauguration. HandsOn Greater DC Cares will provide access to service opportunities through out the Weekend of Service.
